Wedge Osteometry BoneTractor

Designed to Facilitate Accurate Execution of Corrective Wedge Osteotomies of Long Bones

At a Glance

Researchers at Colorado State University have developed the BoneTractor, a surgical device that improves the accuracy of wedge osteotomies. The device is inserted directly into the bone cut, where it can be adjusted to the desired wedge size and secured in place. It acts as a built-in guide for the surgical saw, reducing reliance on manual measurements. Compared to traditional tools, it helps streamline procedures and improve outcomes.

Background

Osteotomies are commonly used to correct bone deformities, treat joint misalignment, and address conditions like hip dysplasia or ligament injuries. These procedures require precise angles and measurements to avoid complications. Current methods rely on pre-operative planning and intra-operative tools like grids, cables, or jigs, which can lead to variability in results. Even small errors can affect recovery and long-term outcomes. There is a need for a more reliable and efficient solution that improves surgical precision.

Overview

The BoneTractor is used after an initial bone cut is made. Once inserted into the osteotomy, the device allows the surgeon to adjust and lock in the exact wedge size needed. It stabilizes the bone and provides a physical guide for the second cut, improving consistency during surgery. The device eliminates the need for external measuring tools and simplifies the workflow. It is designed to work across different patient sizes and can be used in both human and veterinary procedures.

Figure B:
Positioning of the K-wires through the proximal fragment. The holes allow the K-wires to either converge or diverge, securing the proximal fragment in place with the osteotomy flush against the platform, and the caudal cortex against the lip of the device.
