More-Than-Human Lexicon Deck

Play your way into better science conversations

At a Glance

Researchers at Colorado State University have brought together multispecies theory and responsible research theory to develop a unique deck of 57 cards that uses language as a tool to rethink science and policy discussions. Each card features a thought-provoking image and a specially curated word that encourages broader, more inclusive thinking. This “lexicon deck” helps shift conversations beyond human-centered views to consider the wellbeing of other species and ecosystems. Designed for a range of creative uses, the cards can spark new insights, reframe questions, and break through communication roadblocks. The deck is ideal for workshops, classrooms, policy meetings, and more.

Background

Many science and policy discussions are rooted in human-centered thinking, often overlooking how tightly linked human wellbeing is to the health of other organisms and ecosystems. Even when participants care about social and environmental justice, conversations can easily get stuck in familiar patterns. This lexicon deck introduces vocabulary designed to shift those patterns and open space for fresh, multispecies perspectives. By making language a tool for change, this approach supports more responsible research and innovation.

Overview

This 57-card lexicon deck offers a playful yet powerful way to rethink how science policy and research are discussed. Each card includes a visually compelling image on one side and a carefully crafted word on the other—along with a description, an example quote in context, and links to related concepts or “suits” like Rock, Panda, or House Cat. The cards are grouped into five types—Prompt, Tool, Lens, Method, and Unsettling Thing—each encouraging users to reflect on different aspects of multispecies interdependence.

Created as part of the Future Organism project, which explores more-than-human responsible research in the context of synthetic genomics, the deck is designed for use in settings ranging from academic seminars to policy workshops. Users are encouraged to draw cards at random, use them as writing or conversation prompts, or incorporate them into games that stimulate collaborative insight. This approach helps disrupt stagnant narratives, spark imagination, and make room for more-than-human voices in important decisions.
