Researchers at Colorado State University have developed a series of DNA plasmids based on the pTE3’2J Sindbis virus plasmid that can be transfected into mammalian cells to produce non-infectious Sindbis virus replicons (viral genomes with structural proteins removed, non-infectious) and fully-infectious Sindbis viruses. These replicons and viruses can be used to study a wide range of cellular processes in mammalian and insect cells, express various recombinant proteins in these cells, or infect mosquitoes or other species to study infection or their physiology.
